Tenzing Hillary Airport 

The airport's exciting and difficult layout makes it a popular destination in and of itself. The experience of seeing planes take off and land on the small runway will be unusual.

Lukla Airport is a tiny airport that was constructed in 1964 AD under Sir Edmund Hillary's supervision. The airport was later renamed Tenzing Hillary Airport in January 2008, after the first climbers of Mount Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

The runway at the Lukla terminal is made of relatively short, narrow paved concrete. The runway at Lukla Airport is significantly narrower than those at comparable airports, at only 527 meters in length and 65 feet in width. 

Radar systems and air navigation are not used. Instead, radio communication is utilized during takeoffs and landings. The little paved runway is limited to use by helicopters and tiny aircraft.

Despite its tiny size, the area is usually bustling due to the enormous number of hikers that come to the Everest region each year. It serves as the beginning of the well-known EBC Trek Itinerary in Nepal. 

In addition to carrying passengers, the majority of the building supplies and goods to Lukla and other towns and villages in the Everest area are transported by locals on airplanes.

Transportation to Lukla 

The most common way to go to Lukla is by flight from Ramechhap or Kathmandu. The lengthy and laborious process of walking is another alternative, as is using the roads.

From Kathmandu to Lukla by flight

Ramechhap to Lukla Flight

• Duration from Ramechhap to Lukla: 20 minutes (by flight)

Airlines also provide a service from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap to Lukla. Manthali Airport is around 133 kilometers (four to five hours' trip) from Kathmandu by jeep or private vehicle. Lukla is 20 minutes away from Manthali and is a gorgeous, scenic flight.

Helicopter Flight to Lukla 

A helicopter flight to Lukla is a different way to reach Lukla. With views of enormous glaciers, breathtaking mountains, and untamed animals, it takes about 45 minutes.

Kathmandu to Lukla by Road

The drive from Kathmandu to Lukla traverses several topographical features, providing expansive vistas of Nepal's mountains, rivers, villages, customs, and rural areas.

Driving directly to Lukla is not possible. Driving from Kathmandu to Jiri/Phaplu/Shivalaya/Bhandar/Salleri/Bupsa/Kharichola is the first thing we must do. From Kathmandu, it takes around a day to get to these locations. You can reach Lukla after a few days of hiking from here.

Best Seasons to Visit Lukla 

In Lukla Village, the temperature is consistently low and rainy. It does, however, also have sunny days. Early in the morning, there is usually clear weather. However, in the late afternoon, everything is covered in fog.

Here are some of the best seasons to visit Lukla:

Spring (February-May)

The springtime temperature ranges from 27.1°C to 17.4°C, with the latter months seeing milder weather. Rain is usually frequent in the later months, with 5 to 9 days of heavy precipitation per month.

Summer or Monsoon (June–August)

The high temperatures throughout the middle months of the year are uncomfortable for tourists. Lukla has a lot of rain and snowfall during the monsoon. The paths are always getting slick. As a result, this is the slowest season. 

If you visit Lukla in the summer, hotels and other amenities are easily accessible because there aren't many trekkers there. 

Even though it rains from June to August, some travelers still choose these months. It's because it provides stunning views of the mountains and hills, in addition to lush, glossy trees that have recently taken a bath.

Autumn or Fall (September–November)

The temperature falls between 79.5°F (26.4°C) and 64.2°F (17.9°C). The days are bright as the weather settles down. 

Even though the nights are cooler, bright days can get rather hot. It is therefore one of the busiest times of the year in Lukla.

Winter (December-February)

Warm-weather enthusiasts may find it challenging because of the cold temperature. Rainfall and snowfall are seldom on average (0–1 time each month). 

Compared to other months, there are fewer hotels that offer all of the amenities needed for a successful trip. tourists because of the chilly weather. However, there is no barrier and a good view of the surroundings.
