How to Experience the Best of Pokhara in 12-Hour Tour

To quote a famous adage, ‘’the early bird catches the worm.'' And true to this expectation, your day will commence with a breathtaking sunrise at Sarangkot, a hill station that has one of the best scenic views of the Himalayas, particularly the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. At dawn, the golden rays of the sun reflect on the high-rise mountains, creating an awesome sight ideal for taking photographs.

After spending the morning with the sun, you’ll then go back to Pokhara and enjoy a boating experience on Phewa Lake surrounded by breathtaking mountains before returning. A visit to Tal Barahi Temple, located on an island in the middle of the lake, offers a peaceful spiritual retreat and adds to the charm of your day.

You will also go on to visit Davis Falls, or Elbow Falls, as they say, which is interesting in itself due to the fact that the stream of water just plunges without a trace into the depths that is an alcove. Just across the street, you’ll pay a visit to the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, where you will discover a small worship area in the form of Lord Shiva along with a stunning view of the waterfall from the cave interior.

This day will be followed by a back visit to the Tibetan Refugee Camp, where more of the Tibetan traditional arts and crafts will be seen. Finally, to complete your sightseeing package, be at the peaceful World Peace Pagoda, a striking religious edifice where views of Pokhara and the majestic foothills are simply superb. Such a perfect balance of beauty and culture makes it a great full-day sightseeing tour.

Itinerary

Expand AllCollapse All

Here is the detailed itinerary of the whole-day Pokhara City tour. The whole day  time may slightly vary depending upon the time you start the tour.

    1. Early Morning: Sunrise at Sarangkot

5:00 AM: Pickup from your hotel

The day starts early with a pickup from your hotel in Pokhara. The driver will take you on a scenic drive to Sarangkot, which is a hilltop viewpoint located near Lakeside about 30 minutes from here. In Nepal, Sarangkot is famous for being one of the best places to view the sun rise.

5.30–6.30 AM: Catching the Sunrise with Views of the Mountains

Reach Sarangkot at the right time to enjoy the mind-blowing view of the sunrise. As the sun rises, golden rays fall upon the white snow peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, incl. Machapuchare, aka Fishtail Mountain. The sight is enough for a photographer to lose track of time, and as it is very early in the morning and light is everywhere and on the mountains too, all indulging in the glorious scenery will not take long.

07.00 AM: Coming Back to Pokhara and Breakfast

After the sightseeing, return to Pokhara and have an extensive breakfast at a restaurant nearby or at a hotel. This is the best way to enjoy and assimilate the breathtaking morning sight that has just gone by.

    2. Mid-Morning: Phewa Lake and Boating

    9:00 AM: At Phewa Lake

Post breakfast, proceed onto Phewa Lake, which is the most famous attraction of Pokhara. The calm water of an irregular-shaped lake is fringed by hills, presenting a perfect setting for a soothing morning activity. The surrounding mountains, along with the scenic view, make it an everlasting experience.

9.15–10.00 Am: Boating on the Phewa Lake

Paddle out for some Phewa Lake boating, which is one of the famous places to visit in Pokhara. Glide across the clear waters and relish peace as you paddle towards Tal Barahi Temple, a temple on stilts that is a very small but revered pagoda on an island in the center of the lake. You can get off the boat and go to the temple, or rather take the view from inside the boat, and the temple can be nearly filled with water.

    3. Late Morning: Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave

10:30 AM: Visit to Davis Falls

Post the boat tour, make your way to Davis Falls, one of the most loved spots in Pokhara. It is also famous for the reason that the waterfall also referred to as Patale Chango, mysteriously disappears underground, making it a curious and lovely spectacle. One can either stand at a distance from the falls or click pictures of the falls from different levels.

11:00 AM: Visit to Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave

Situated a stone’s throw from Davis Falls is the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, a shrine to Lord Shiva. The cave contains an underground waterfall and explorers traverse dark hallways to gain access to the depths of the cave. With the sound of the running water and the scanty light illumination within the cave, it certainly gives a creepy yet fascinating experience.

    4. Noon: Tibetan Refugee Camp

12:00 PM: Visit Tibetan Refugee Camp

In the early afternoon, visit the Tibetan Refugee Camp, which is found on the northern side of Pokhara. This is especially for those citizens of Tibet who got displaced during the Chinese invasion of Tibet. It provides much about the life, practices, and even art of the Tibetan people. You can see the people making mats and other products out of art. There are even a few shops selling Tibetan culture, such as decorated carpets, beads, wool made through handicrafts, and others.

    5. Lunch Break

1.00 PM: Lunch at a restaurant situated at the lakeside.

After the trip to the Tibetan Refugee Camp, it is time for lunch. In Lakeside, there are lots of restaurants, cafes, and eating joints offering local Nepali and also foreign cuisine. So, whether it is traditional Nepali aaloo bhaat gundruk and daal, chicken momos and noodles or continental food, everything is served.

Recommendation: If the weather is permitting, a lakeside cafe is recommended so that you can have a meal while enjoying the sights of water and the mountains.

    6. Afternoon: World Peace Pagoda

2:00 PM: Drive to World Peace Pagoda
After lunch, a brief drive (or hike) on a hilltop across Phewa Lake, which houses the World Peace Pagoda. A Buddhist stupa, the pagoda also offers beautiful views of Pokhara city, Phewa Lake, and overall, the whole Himalayas, making it a great place for meditation, in case someone wants to meditate or rather take pictures of the surroundings.

2:30-3:30 PM: Explore and the views
Upon reaching the pagoda, enjoy the exquisite views from the pagoda for some time. On a clear day, one would sight the great Annapurna Range, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchare, and Pokhara with its surrounding areas and many more. The pagoda is very gorgeous and relaxing as well.

    7. Late Afternoon: International Mountain Museum (Optional)

4:00 PM: Optional Visit to the International Mountain Museum
If it’s not too cumbersome, go inside the International Mountain Museum, which contains more educational materials about mountaineering and people who ever practiced it within Nepal. The museum portrays all the famed British and other climbers, Sir Edmond Hillary and Tenzing Norgay included, who undertook climbing in Nepal and comes with an enthralling history of mountains with femenine flora also dedicated to them and Himalaya climbing history within Nepal, of course.

    8. Conclusion and Return

    5:00 PM: Return to Hotel
After the sightseeing at the International Mountain Museum (or the preceding stop on your itinerary), you will be taken back to your hotel in Pokhara.
