Best Season for Ghorpani 4 days Trek

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the best times for the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek. The weather is steady then, with beautiful vistas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and clear skies. Spring brings the rhododendron forests along the route alive with brilliant red, pink, and white flowers, thus offering a scenic walking experience.

In contrast, autumn offers great visibility, cool air, and mild temperatures; hence, it's the perfect time for wide-range mountain sights and photo shooting. Winter may be chillier at greater elevations, but it also provides solitude and snow-covered paths running from December to February.

Although it is a perfect time for lush greenery and fewer crowds, the 4 Days Poon Hill Trek in monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rains that disguise views and render paths slick. Spring and fall are excellent for this hike in terms of experience.

This little yet busy settlement is an entrance to the Annapurna Conservation Area and welcomes trekkers with beautiful surroundings and a happening atmosphere. There are a few shops, guesthouses, and check-posts in Nayapul where the permits are checked before starting the trek.

Nayapul Village- Starting Point of Poon Hill Trek

Trekking Experience from Nayapul to Tikhedhunga

It is a soft, easy walk at the very start of the trek as the trail winds along the Modi Khola River, following an obviously marked path that leads to the beautiful village of Birethanti at 1,025 meters, where one registers at the checkpoint. The route from here now follows Bhurgundi Khola and keeps on gaining altitude, moving through the subtropical forests with small waterfalls and terracing farmland. The villages along the way—Sudame and Hile—provide a glance into Nepalese rural life, plus cozy hospitality in the small teahouses.

Small Waterfall During the Trek to Tadapani

The day's trek today culminates in a gentle climb to Tikhedhunga at 1,540 meters, which presents spectacular views of the surrounding hills and peaks in the distance.

    Tikhedhunga (1,540 m / 5,052 ft)

Tikhedhunga is a village on the Bhurgundi Khola River-a beautiful village with a quiet little town, surrounded by tea houses and lodges, including some decent accommodations for hikers. Among the green hills, the refreshing atmosphere is excellent to relax and rest before the strenuous hike to Ulleri the next day.

    Beautiful Tikhedhunga Village

    Sceneries and Mountain Views

Although the first day of the trek is more to feel the rural landscape, it gives a very beautiful view of green terraced fields, dense forests, and flowing rivers. On clear days, the far-off views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks appear through the hills. Serene countryside, traditional villages, and friendly natives add to the overall charm during this day of the trek.

Day 2 of the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is probably one of the most tiring yet rewarding days of the whole journey. It starts in Tikhedhunga and goes up the demanding Ulleri staircase: a steep ascent of more than 3,000 stone steps. After defeating this uphill, the trail rises gently through forests of rhododendrons and oaks, a visual treat for breathtaking natural beauty. Passing through beautiful villages like Banthanti and Nangethanti, the trek finally reaches Ghorepani (2,860 m), a beautiful Gurung and Magar village, famous for its spectacular mountain views.

The trek today is up and down, passing through dense forests of varied flora and fauna and spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. It is a whole different landscape that prepares the trekkers for the early morning hike to Poon Hill as the elevation increases with cool mountain air.

The trek begins with the steep climb to Ulleri at 2,070 meters, a village known for its endless stone steps numbering over 3,000. This part of the trek is considered the most strenuous during the day, which requires a good steady pace with endurance. Besides, this uphill climb offers fantastic views of the surrounding hills and the first view of Annapurna South at 7,219 meters and Hiunchuli at 6,441 meters peeping through the clouds.

      Steps on Ulleri Village

Trek from Ulleri to Banthanti and Nangethanti

The trail now goes up in more gentle gradients up the track, through dense rhododendron and oak forest. During spring, rhododendrons burst into bloom in red and pink shades, which looks magical.

      Trek to Banthanti Village

Next, it is Banthanti at 2,250 meters, a small village where trekkers can take a short break and have some tea or snacks. Continuing further up, the trail reaches Nangethanti at 2,460 meters, another rest point before making it up to Ghorepani. En route, the trekkers might catch glimpses of some Himalayan birds, monkeys, and other wildlife of the Annapurna region.

      Arrival at Ghorepani (2,860m / 9,383 ft)

The trail goes up after 6 - 7 hours of trekking until it finally opens to Ghorepani, a scenic village at the foothills of Poon Hill. Ghorepani is one of the major stops on the Annapurna Circuit and Poon Hill trek, representing traditional Magar and Gurung culture with warm hospitality and breathtaking mountain views.

      Ghorepani Village

Ghorepani itself offers surreal close-up views of Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Nilgiri. Besides, trekkers can also rest in a cozy tea house, enjoy the hot meal, and get prepared for the early morning sunrise hike to Poon Hill.

The third day of the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is probably the most thrilling and rewarding day. Early in the morning, hike to Poon Hill, 3,210 m (10,531 ft) above sea level, which is one of the most famous viewpoints in the Annapurna region. It rewards trekkers with a breathtaking panoramic sunrise view over the Himalayas: Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and Manaslu. After watching the sunrise and taking magnificent views of pictures, the trek returns for breakfast at Ghorepani and heads toward Tadapani. This route to Tadapani goes through some of the most beautiful rhododendron forests, small streams, and high-altitude pastures.

Accommodation During Annapurna Poon Hill 4 Days Trek

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek accommodations are teahouses and lodges that are simple yet comfortable, locally run by families. These tea houses give a warm and cozy atmosphere, a time to rest for trekkers after a day's hike. The rooms are usually twin-sharing, each having basic beds with blankets and pillows. While some lodges may offer attached bathrooms in lower-altitude villages, most accommodations have shared bathroom facilities with squat or Western-style toilets. Most places do offer hot showers, although often for an extra fee.

There are well-managed tea houses in villages such as Tikhedhunga, Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Ghandruk that have dining halls heated with wood stoves for relaxing and socializing. A few of the lodges offer internet access and charging facilities; most services have to be paid for separately.

Even simple tea houses become a unique experience on this trek because they are managed by local Gurung and Magar, allowing trekkers to completely immerse themselves in local tradition, hospitality, and cuisine. Accommodations along the Annapurna Circuit should ideally be booked prior to the high trekking season, which coincides with the spring and autumn seasons, respectively.

Food During Poon Hill Sunrise Trek

Food on the Poon Hill Trek is delicious and energetic, mainly provided from the local tea houses en route, but very variable. Most of the meals are freshly prepared from locally sourced ingredients to provide trekkers with hearty, nutritious diets to keep them going through the journey. The meal options range from traditional Nepali and Tibetan cuisine to basic western foods for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

          Trekking Breakfast

For the trekking, the hot filling-up breakfast is quite vital. It may be accompanied by a variety of options offered by different tea houses to cater to every taste: Tibetan bread with honey or jam, pancakes, porridge, eggs (boiled, fried, scrambled), muesli, or toast. The heavy lunches are noodle soup and chapati with curry. A hot cup of tea, coffee, or masala chai to start the day with the fresh mountain air will be just great.

          Lunch Options Along the Trail

Normally, lunch is taken at some mid-point teahouse on the way up. The most recommended and preferred meal is Dal Bhat—a traditional Nepali meal consisting of rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, pickles, and sometimes meat. This meal is not only healthy but also comes with unlimited refills, which makes it a trekker's favorite. Fried rice, noodles, momo (a type of dumpling), pasta, spaghetti, and garlic soup are some of the other lunch items available. Garlic soup helps in altitude adaptation, so trekkers enjoy this particular item.

          Dinner and Evening Meals

Dinner is pretty much similar to lunch, with varieties of Nepali and international items. Pizza, pasta, fried noodles, vegetable curries, and mashed potatoes are good carb-rich, warm meals to refuel with after a long day of trekking. On colder nights in higher elevations, most trekkers prefer Sherpa stew, a hearty soup with vegetables, meat, and noodles. Hot chocolate, ginger lemon honey tea, and herbal teas are other common drinks found in the tea houses and very soothing for relaxation and digestion.

          Snacks and Hydration

The most important thing is to keep yourself hydrated and energized through the entire trek. For refilling bottles, boiled or filtered water is available in the tea houses, thus minimizing plastic waste. As a precaution, it would be advisable to also carry some water purification tablets or filters. Energy bars, biscuits, chocolates, dried fruits, and nuts are available in the tea houses for snacking, although the prices might be higher at higher altitudes. Many also bring their lightweight snacks to munch on between stops.

Permits Required for the Poon Hill Trek

Permits required to trek to Ghorepani Poon Hill officially include the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit and the Trekkers' Information Management System card. These permits are required for all trekkers to protect the environment and travelers.

The ACAP is issued from the Nepal Tourism Board and is compulsory to carry for entrance into the Annapurna Conservation Area. In this way, this permit supports a number of conservation projects, trail maintenance, and sustainable tourism initiatives within this area. Since the Poon Hill trek falls within the Annapurna region, carrying this permit is compulsory.

Another important permit is the Trekkers' Information Management Systems card, which keeps a record for the purpose of safety and rescue. In emergencies, this card tracks trekkers, ensuring that only registered travelers enter the trekking zones. TIMS operates under TAAN and NTB.

Both permits can be obtained either in Kathmandu or in Pokhara at the Nepal Tourism Board offices. If you book your trek through us, we will make all the arrangements regarding the permits for you. You must carry these permits throughout the trek, as numerous checkpoints along the trail scrutinize them. If the traveler fails to produce these permits, they risk a fine or even denial of entry into the area.

Travel Insurance for 4 Days Trek to Ghorepani Poon Hill

For this Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, travel insurance is highly recommended, as it covers against financial risks in case of contingencies. Though this trek has been graded as moderate and the altitude gain is not extreme, injuries, illness, trip cancellations, and loss of baggage are possible unforeseen circumstances that may happen during this trek. Comprehensive travel insurance will cover all contingencies relating to medical emergencies, evacuation, and other issues that may arise during the trek.

The most critical features of the travel insurance for this trek are emergency medical cover and evacuation. While the altitude of Poon Hill reaches 3,210 meters, a safe elevation with minimal severe altitude sickness, some minor symptoms are often seen. Should one fall into a serious medical condition that requires them to be evacuated by a helicopter, which costs thousands of dollars, a decent insurance policy would absorb such costs, which might be debilitating in case of a critical situation.

Travelers may experience trip cancellations or delays due to bad weather, personal health issues, or other unforeseen circumstances. Travel insurance may help recover non-refundable expenses such as flights, accommodations, and trekking permits. Similarly, insurance that covers lost, stolen, or damaged belongings can be useful, especially for expensive trekking gear or electronic devices.

Trekkers need to make sure their plan covers them for trekking up to at least 3,500 meters, including helicopter evacuation and medical expenses. Some policies actually exclude trekking activities, which is why one has to make sure about all the terms and conditions. Buy the right travel insurance policy and be insured to enjoy the fullness of the Poon Hill adventure without any afterthoughts or setbacks along the way.

Four Days of Pure Bliss in the Ghorepani Poon Hill in Annapurna Region

Nepal Trek Adventure made my Ghorepani Poon Hill trek a flawless and unforgettable experience. My guide, TB(Tribhuvan), was not only knowledgeable but also great company.

The trek started from Nayapul, winding through charming villages and beautiful forests. Ulleri’s 3,000 stone steps were the most challenging part, but reaching Ghorepani was a relief. The cool mountain air and warm hospitality made it worth the effort.

The sunrise at Poon Hill was truly enchanting. As the golden light kissed the peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this journey. The view was mesmerizing and worth every single step.

The trek continued through Tadapani and ended in Ghandruk, where I got to experience the Gurung culture firsthand. Walking through rhododendron forests, crossing suspension bridges, and hearing the sound of distant waterfalls made this trek feel like a dream.

Huge thanks to NTA and TB for making this a smooth and enjoyable adventure. If you have a few days in Nepal, don’t miss this trek!

A Perfect Himalayan Getaway to Ghorepani

I only had a few days to spare in Nepal, and the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek was the perfect choice. Nepal Trek Adventure handled all the logistics seamlessly, and my guide, Pasang, was fantastic.

From Nayapul, we walked through villages and crossed several suspension bridges over rushing rivers. The climb to Ulleri was a challenge with its never-ending stone steps, but the lush forests and occasional glimpses of the mountains kept me motivated.

Ghorepani was incredibly peaceful, and the fresh mountain air was rejuvenating. We started the Poon Hill ascent in the dark, guided by our headlamps and the sound of the wind. Upon reaching the summit, we were captivated by the breathtaking view of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machapuchare, standing tall as the first rays of sunlight touched them.

The descent was equally enjoyable, especially the walk through rhododendron forests towards Ghandruk. The village had a fascinating Gurung culture, and the traditional houses added to its charm.

I’m so grateful to NTA and Shiva for making this trek such a smooth and memorable experience. Highly recommended!
