The next stage of the Tilicho Lake with Thorong La Pass Trek is an exhilarating journey that leads to Besisahar, the entry point to the entire Annapurna Circuit. This journey takes approximately 6-7 hours and spans approximately 175 kilometers from Kathmandu. The moving road leaves behind all the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu and enters into verdant hilly areas, traversed by winding rivers and dotted with tiny villages.

Gradually the lower valleys give their way to hilly terrain, which is a spotty sample of how Himalayan the whole area will become. At an altitude of 760 meters (2,493 feet), Besisahar is also the start of many trekking trails into Annapurna. Here, all trekkers can even take a bit of rest before heading into the tougher days of the trek. This day is for travelling and preparing the ground for the trek.

On this third day of the trek, we will travel from Besisahar to Chame. About 60 kilometers will cover 5–6 hours of driving on the road.  Road conditions tend to vary, and as you get deeper into the mountains, they become rugged and narrow. During this drive, you will pass the beautiful settlements of Bhulbhule and Jagat, which host traditional stone houses with terraced fields.

The beauty becomes greater and greater while rising towards Chame, while sharp peaks of the Annapurna and Lamjung Himal loom in the distance. Chame is at an altitude of 2,670 m (8,760 ft) and is the gateway to the upper Annapurna Conservation Area. A small but lively town, it gives its first taste of mountain hospitality to trekkers. Relax and allow time to acclimatize to the increasing altitude after reaching this point.

The actual trekking begins on the fourth day, starting from Chame and heading towards the picturesque village of Pisang, nestled in the heart of the Annapurna region. It is a moderate hike of about 17 kilometers (10.5 miles), taking approximately 5–6 hours to reach.  The route begins with a gradual ascent through pine trees and small hamlets, offering breathtaking views of high and dominating peaks like the mighty Annapurna II or Lamjung Himal. The scenery changes again while walking, leaving behind barren hills with rocky outcrops.

Pisang, located at an altitude of 3,300 meters above sea level, is Tibetan-style architecture with most of the people trekking here for cultural exploration of that region. It could be a fine acclimatization point before traveling higher up into the mountains, with the fine views of the heavy Annapurna range in the background. This is where one sleeps, in an airy atmosphere of Pisang, preparing oneself for the many days to come.

After being on the trek for Day 5, the distance of the trek from Pisang to Manang is stretching almost 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) and more or less five to six hours of walk trails towards Manang. The trek gradually ascends, passing through beautiful village settlements such as Braka and Lingdam. As a somewhat departure from Pisang would be, it begins more alpine and rocky than other hikes. The stony surface walk opens to spectacular views of the Annapurna and Gangapurna Peaks, which could accomplish your adventure. There are also several small river crossings, among the main adventures of this trek.

Manang has a height of 3,540 meters (11,614 feet) and is a bigger village than other ones, placed on the route and an important stop for trekkers. Here you come across lodges and small local shops, more than a local hospital, creating a better opportunity for acclimatizing before going higher up from the mountains. Manang is famous for its stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, besides the display of its unique Tibetan culture. The day comes to an end in Manang, where staying overnight becomes important to relax and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding areas.

The Sixth Day has been declared the acclimatization day in Manang, where your body will make preparations to trek even higher altitudes. The trek continues towards higher elevations, making this day crucial for acclimatization and preventing altitude sickness. A chance to explore some parts of Manang during the periods of rest. You can hike another 3-4 hours from Manang to Gangapurna, and trekkers will have a serene view of this lake along with the Annapurna range behind.

Or you could take a tour of the Manang Monastery, which really gives you a deep insight into the local culture and spiritual stuff. For more adventure, trekkers can hike for about an hour to Khangsar Village or find other nearby viewpoints with breathtaking views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak. It is also that day to catch up on rest, rehydrate, and prepare your kit for the trail ahead, the high-altitude Tilicho Base Camp trek.

Day 7 offers a long, but surely deserving, trek from Manang to Tilicho Base Camp. The distance is roughly 11 kilometers (6.8 miles), and the hike to base camp usually takes between 5 and 7 hours depending upon the hiker's speed. The path was upwards, and as one moved higher, the terrain became increasingly rocky and exposed. The part of the trek mainly comprised narrow and twisting paths, with passing by small settlements like Khangsar Village, where trekkers would peek into the window of traditional Tibetan architecture.

Towards the end of the trek, you will reach the base camp, and the topography is steadily rugged and alpine-like, with little vegetation and dramatic, barren terrains. The altitude of Tilicho Base Camp is 4,150 meters (13,615 feet) and lies below the towering Tilicho Peak, where visitors could view other snow-capped peaks all around. The campsite presents amazing opportunities for people to witness the grandeur of the Himalayas at close quarters.

It is a rather strenuous day with high altitude and steep terrain, and therefore hikers should be careful to pace themselves and take regular breaks to avoid altitude sickness. This is the place where trekkers appreciate the beautiful surroundings before setting off the next day to scale the steep terrain leading to Tilicho Lake.

Day eight presents an early rise and shine, taking you on a journey trek from Tilicho Base Camp to the greatest high-altitude lake: Tilicho Lake—at 4919 m (16138 ft) above sea level. Approximately four to five kilometers (2.5–3 miles) are actually hiked from base camp to get to the lake, and normally it takes 4-5 hours one way. Though the path is inclined and rocky, you will enjoy mesmerizing views of surrounding snowcapped peaks such as Tilicho Peak and Gangapurna. The turquoise water and barren mountains create an outlandish and beautiful scene while imposing climbing and ascending pathways.

Lastly, you will retrace your track and return to Shrikharka (also known as Khangsar), a small settlement low in altitude. The return trek to Shrikharka takes about 7-8 hours since the trekkers will descend back to 3,650 meters (1,975 feet). Owing to physical exertion by association with altitude and long trekking hours, this is one such day that requires the system to be prepared and hydrated at all times. Shrikharka thus serves as a point of needed rest and acclimatization before the continued trek onward.

On the 9th day, you will trek from Shrikharka to Phedi, a distance of roughly 8-10 kilometers (5-6 miles), which usually takes around 5-6 hours. As it leaves the high altitudes and enters lower, forested areas, the trail descends quite smoothly. Along the way, you will pass beautiful villages like Khingar and Titi, which give a hint of rural mountain living.

As you reach Phedi, there are greater stretches of green you will see, with lush forests and the towering peaks of the Annapurna range sometimes glimpsed in the distance. Phedi, at this height of 4,200 meters (13,780 feet), is a fairly calm and quiet location for resting and acclimatization. An evening in Phedi is an opportune time to relax and prepare for the long trek to Thorong La Pass over the next few days.

It's the tenth day of the trek that forms the crux of this trail—the Thorong La Pass, and beyond Muktinath. This day of trekking is very arduous and yet the most rewarding. The day actually breaks early as you set out for a steep climb up to the pass over an altitude of 5416 meters (17769 feet). Thorong La will take about 6-7 hours before finally getting there and will be a trek of approximately 15 kilometers (9.3 miles). Though the hike can be rigorous and strenuous due to altitudes, the views from the Thorung Pass make it so worth it—your surroundings beauty comprises towering mountains.

After reaching the pass, you begin your descent toward Muktinath. The descent takes around 4 to 5 hours, and the altitude of Muktinath is 3710 meters (12172 feet). It also boasts historic temples and the "eternal flame," a natural gas flame that burns continuously. It is a quiet, spiritual village where people like to come and rest after a long day of trekking, particularly since many people spend the night there before heading down further to Pokhara.

On the 11th day, you will leave MuktiNath behind and make your journey towards Pokhara. This is an amazing lakeside city located right at the foothill of the Annapurna ranges. Traveling distance of MuktiNath-Pokhara covers 6 to 7 hours. As you travel by this route, your altitude descends to the valleys of greenery with beautiful stops at Jomsom and Beni. The road conditions vary, and so does the scenery, from long and often beautiful views of the Kali Gandaki River valley and eyes on both the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Reaching Pokhara will give you the chance to relax after such an arduous trek. Its Phewa Lake and adventure sports are known in Pokhara, and mostly its scenery of calm with the glimpses of the Himalayas makes it the right city to think of your trekking experience before moving on.

With an optional flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu, Day 12 is the last part for returning to the capital after a trek. This journey generally takes around 25-30 minutes by air and offers a treasure trove of aerial views not just of the Annapurna and Langtang mountain ranges but also the green hills and valleys that have just been traversed. It's pretty much for trekkers who are lacking time or simply want to avoid the long drive back; it is a very comfortable option, besides being quite picturesque. Naturally, it is subject to weather conditions, so delays may occur due to cloud cover or some other factors related to the mountains.

If you do not want to fly, then you can take a road trip for about 6-7 hours, with reminiscences of changing vistas as one descends from the mountains into the Kathmandu valley.

In case you want to avail yourself of the flight option or need more information about how to book a flight, please refer to the add-on options proposed for this trek; you can reserve a seat and make all arrangements for a seamless trip back to Kathmandu.

Our team guides, porters and accompanying staff are locals with a broad knowledge about each and every location that we travel through.

We experienced an incredible journey in Nepal. The planning was excellent in taking our time into consideration. Please accept our gratitude, Nepal Trek Adventure and Expedition. We did trek to Tilicho lake. At that time, Binod, the owner of Nepal Trek Adventure & Expedition, welcomes us and starts things off. Their administration and organization of the Tilicho trek were excellent. I am speechless in his presence. Simply said, the NTA crew is among the greatest trekking teams I have ever encountered. We were surprised by how well Nepal and Nepalese people worked together. We want to go with Nepal Trek Adventures and Expedition when we go again. They give you the impression that you are in our house, not an office.

Mesmerizing Tilicho Lake Trek in Nepal

Nepal is a wonderful nation. Practically, all piece of Nepal is delightful, but lakes and glaciers view are the most amazing ones. This time I went for Tilicho Lake Trek in Nepal. I appreciated the trek a ton. I saw numerous excellent wild creatures and winged animals, tropical timberlands with blooming blossoms and herbs, mountains and some more amid the trail. The way towards the lake was somewhat elusive yet generally speaking it was entertaining. I additionally demanded my plan for arranging a plunge to Tilicho Lake. It was so troublesome to do so as the lake’s water was so cold and was like freezing. I will experience the dive to this beautiful lake at least once in a life. For this, I will return to Nepal with no doubt. Yet at the same time, other natural experiences were generally excellent. I delighted in it a great deal. Much obliged to you Nepal Trek Adventure and Expedition for organizing such an excellent trekking journey for me. Highly recommended to all the adventure lovers.
