Best Time to Trek to Tilicho Lake

The best time for your 10 days trekking journey to Tilicho Lake is considered to be the spring season (March until May) and the autumn season (September until November). Both of these seasons offer pleasant weather if you are planning to trek to the Himalayas in Nepal.

Spring Season

In Nepal, the spring season lasts from March all the way until May. The spring season is one of the best seasons of the year to travel to Nepal and Tilicho Lake.  Due to the steady weather, lovely scenery, and moderate temperatures, trekking in this season ensures a comfortable journey.

Trekking during this season also allows you to experience the lush green forest, blossoming rhododendrons on the hills, and the charming atmosphere of nature.

Trekking the Tilicho Lake in the springtime offers breathtaking views of Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, Pisang Peak, and several other nearby mountains. In addition, the trail's gompas and monasteries, which offer a breathtaking view of the Manang Valley and Himalayan scenery, are stunning in the spring season.

During this season, the temperature ranges from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F) during the day and drops around -5°C to 5°C (23°F to 41°F) at night.

Autumn Season

In Nepal, the fall months are September, October, and November. Additionally, it is the ideal time to travel to Nepal.

This season is ideal for trekking and other adventurous sports because of the lovely climate, steady and reasonable levels of weather and temperature, and clear skies. You can take in the breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Manaslu regions during these months.

During the 10-day trek to Tilicho Lake, the somewhat dry landscapes and breathtaking natural atmosphere are among Nepal's greatest experiences. In addition, you can also enjoy Nepal's well-known celebrations like Dashain and Tihar.

During this season, the temperature ranges from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F) during the day and drops around -10°C to 0°C (14°F to 32°F) at night.

Additional Consideration:

  • Winter (December to February): While the trek is possible with proper preparation, expect extreme cold (days: -5°C to -15°C, nights: -20°C to -30°C), heavy snowfall, and potentially closed passes.

  • Monsoon (June to August): Heavy rain, landslides, and treacherous trails make trekking during the monsoon unadvisable.

Our Advice: If you want to do this trek during the off-season, then make sure to learn about the weather patterns properly and prepare for your trek accordingly. If you have any queries regarding 10 days of trekking to Tilicho Lake during the off-season, we are always there to help you.

The next stage of the 10 days Tilicho Lake Trek is an exhilarating journey that leads to Besisahar, the entry point to the entire Annapurna Circuit. This journey takes approximately 6-7 hours and spans approximately 175 kilometers from Kathmandu. The moving road leaves behind all the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu and enters into verdant hilly areas, traversed by winding rivers and dotted with tiny villages.

Gradually the lower valleys give their way to hilly terrain, which is a spotty sample of how Himalayan the whole area will become. At an altitude of 760 meters (2,493 feet), Besisahar is also the start of many trekking trails into Annapurna. Here, all trekkers can even take a bit of rest before heading into the tougher days of the trek. This day is for travelling and preparing the ground for the trek.

On this third day of the trek, we will travel from Besisahar to Chame. About 60 kilometers will cover 5–6 hours of driving on the road.  Road conditions tend to vary, and as you get deeper into the mountains, they become rugged and narrow. During this drive, you will pass the beautiful settlements of Bhulbhule and Jagat, which host traditional stone houses with terraced fields.

The beauty becomes greater and greater while rising towards Chame, while sharp peaks of the Annapurna and Lamjung Himal loom in the distance. Chame is at an altitude of 2,670 m (8,760 ft) and is the gateway to the upper Annapurna Conservation Area. A small but lively town, it gives its first taste of mountain hospitality to trekkers. Relax and allow time to acclimatize to the increasing altitude after reaching this point.

The actual trekking begins on the fourth day, starting from Chame and heading towards the picturesque village of Pisang, nestled in the heart of the Annapurna region. It is a moderate hike of about 17 kilometers (10.5 miles), taking approximately 5–6 hours to reach.  The route begins with a gradual ascent through pine trees and small hamlets, offering breathtaking views of high and dominating peaks like the mighty Annapurna II or Lamjung Himal. The scenery changes again while walking, leaving behind barren hills with rocky outcrops.

Pisang, located at an altitude of 3,300 meters above sea level, is Tibetan-style architecture with most of the people trekking here for cultural exploration of that region. It could be a fine acclimatization point before traveling higher up into the mountains, with the fine views of the heavy Annapurna range in the background. This is where one sleeps, in an airy atmosphere of Pisang, preparing oneself for the many days to come.

After being on the trek for Day 4, the distance of the trek from Pisang to Manang is stretching almost 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) and more or less five to six hours of walk trails towards Manang. The trek gradually ascends, passing through beautiful village settlements such as Braka and Lingdam. As a somewhat departure from Pisang would be, it begins more alpine and rocky than other hikes. The stony surface walk opens to spectacular views of the Annapurna and Gangapurna Peaks, which could accomplish your adventure. There are also several small river crossings, among the main adventures of this trek.

Manang has a height of 3,540 meters (11,614 feet) and is a bigger village than other ones, placed on the route and an important stop for trekkers. Here you come across lodges and small local shops, more than a local hospital, creating a better opportunity for acclimatizing before going higher up from the mountains. Manang is famous for its stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, besides the display of its unique Tibetan culture. The day comes to an end in Manang, where staying overnight becomes important to relax and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding areas.

The sixth day has been declared the acclimatization day in Manang, where your body will make preparations to trek even higher altitudes. The trek continues towards higher elevations, making this day crucial for acclimatization and preventing altitude sickness. A chance to explore some parts of Manang during the periods of rest. You can hike another 3-4 hours from Manang to Gangapurna, and trekkers will have a serene view of this lake along with the Annapurna range behind.

Or you could take a tour of the Manang Monastery, which really gives you a deep insight into the local culture and spiritual stuff. For more adventure, trekkers can hike for about an hour to Khangsar Village or find other nearby viewpoints with breathtaking views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak. It is also that day to catch up on rest, rehydrate, and ready your kit for the trail ahead, the high-altitude Tilicho Base Camp trek.

Day 7 offers a long, but surely deserving, trek from Manang to Tilicho Base Camp. The distance is roughly 11 kilometers (6.8 miles), and the hike to base camp usually takes between 5 and 7 hours depending upon the hiker's speed. The path was upwards, and as one moved higher, the terrain became increasingly rocky and exposed.

The part of the trek mainly comprised narrow and twisting paths, with passing by small settlements like Khangsar Village, where trekkers would peek into the window of traditional Tibetan architecture. Towards the end of the trek, you will reach the base camp, and the topography is steadily rugged and alpine-like, with little vegetation and dramatic, barren terrains. The altitude of Tilicho Base Camp is 4,150 meters (13,615 feet) and lies below the towering Tilicho Peak, where visitors could view other snow-capped peaks all around.

The campsite presents amazing opportunities for people to witness the grandeur of the Himalayas at close quarters. It is a rather strenuous day with high altitude and steep terrain, and therefore hikers should be careful to pace themselves and take regular breaks to avoid altitude sickness. This is the place where trekkers appreciate the beautiful surroundings before setting off the next day to scale the steep terrain leading to Tilicho Lake.

On the eighth day, we will embark on a trek that will take us from Tilicho Base Camp to Tilicho Lake and then back to Manang. This day will be a strenuous one with a steep climb toward Tilicho Lake, the highest among lakes in the world. It has a rocky and steep trail, but the view of the Tilicho Peak, Gangapurna, and the other parts of the Himalayas is enough to make the effort worthwhile.

You will enjoy the peace and quiet of its turquoise waters as it is framed by dramatic mountain tops after reaching the lake. After spending some time at the lake, you'll be backtracked towards Manang for an overnight session. The journey back includes the same way they have come; hence, it would lessen the stress of high altitude.

The ninth day of the trek is a descent from Manang to Chame, the district headquarters of the Manang region. Most of the trek is downhill and passes through beautiful villages like Braga and Dharapani, along with views of Annapurna II and Gangapurna. The lower valley habitat changes gradually from alpine to a more forested habitat when descending further down. And Chame is a lower-altitude area compared to the previous camping sites, hence making it a good relief with its greenery and clear sky. Then, you will spend the night in Chame before your final journey back.

On Day 10, after your last night in Chame, you will take a drive from Chame to Besisahar, which takes about 4-5 hours. From Besisahar, you will catch a local bus for the drive back to Kathmandu. The journey from Besisahar to Kathmandu takes around 6-7 hours, with scenic views of rural Nepal, terraced fields, rivers, and small villages. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you can unwind and reflect on the incredible experiences of your trek to Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass.

Our team guides, porters and accompanying staff are locals with a broad knowledge about each and every location that we travel through.

Permits Required for Tilicho Lake Trek 10 Days

Permits are basically permissions that are required to enter the Annapurna Conservation Area during your 10 days trek to Tilicho Lake. For this trek, two essential permits are required, which are the Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP).

                      Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS)

                      • This card helps track trekkers' movements and ensures your safety in remote areas.
                      • Cost: NPR 2000 for foreigners, NPR 100 for SAARC nationals, and free for Nepali citizens.
                      • Validity: This trekking permit is valid for 1 month.

                      Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

                      • This permit grants you access to the Annapurna Conservation Area, which includes the Tilicho Lake region.
                      • Cost: NPR 3000 for foreigners, NPR 100 for SAARC nationals, and free for Nepali citizens.
                      • Validity: You can choose from 7, 14, or 30 days of validity. For your 10-day trek, the 14-day permit will be sufficient.

Note: All of the charges that come with the permits are included in our package’s cost. Our guides will take care of these permits for you so that you can have a comfortable journey.

Tilicho Lake Trek 10 Days Accommodation

Over the course of your 10 days trekking journey to Tilicho Lake, we will accommodate you with 2 nights in Kathmandu (before and after your trek) and 8 nights at local tea houses/lodges.

In these 8 days, you will get to stay in villages like Besisahar, Chame, Humde Airport, Khangsar, Tilicho Base Camp, Siri Kharka, and Manang, respectively. Please note that all the accommodations that we provide will be on a twin-sharing basis.

However, if you are a couple or want a single room, please mention it during the time of booking this package. During the trails, you will find various tea houses or lodges for accommodation. Our guides will arrange for you the best and most comfortable tea houses or lodges to stay in.

These modest tea houses provide common toilets and simple rooms with twin beds. There is no certainty that teahouses have adjoining restrooms; however, some could. Although most accommodations supply bedding, we suggest you bring a sleeping bag for extra comfort, particularly in higher altitudes.

There will be basic amenities like shared restrooms, a dining area serving meals, and sometimes a common space with a stove to stay warm. It might be possible to charge electrical gadgets in some tea houses, but it's best to bring a portable charger with you.

In Manang, you can find relatively better accommodations compared to other remote areas. However, because of the difficult terrain and greater altitude, accommodations become more basic as you go closer to Tilicho Base Camp and the surrounding areas around Tilicho Lake.

Meals During 10 Days Tilicho Lake Trek

Over the course of your 10 days trek to Tilicho Lake, we will provide you with 9 breakfasts, 9 lunches and 8 dinners, including 1 farewell dinner in Kathmandu.

There will be a wide range of food options available on the trek, but it's crucial to remember that alternatives and availability may decrease as you approach higher elevations. Here's a broad idea of what to expect in terms of food:

Breakfast: A typical breakfast menu consists of bread, muesli, porridge, eggs (boiled, fried, or omelets), and occasionally pancakes. Tea and coffee will be accessible in large quantities as hot beverages.

Lunch: Soups, sandwiches, fried rice, noodles, and occasionally local foods like dal bhat will be available for lunch. In certain locations, you can also purchase snacks, including energy bars, cookies, and fresh fruits.

Dinner: Like lunch, dinner usually consists of several alternatives plus local delicacies. A wholesome and widely accessible option is dal bhat, a typical Nepalese meal consisting of rice, lentil soup, veggies, and occasionally meat.

If you have specific dietary requirements or restrictions, please communicate them with us. We will arrange the meals for you accordingly.

Tilicho Lake Trek 10 Days Difficulty

Your 10 days of Tilicho Lake trek journey can be rated as moderate depending on your current level of fitness, prior trekking experience, and acclimatization planning. However, there might be some challenges that you might face during your trek.

The first challenge that you might face during this trek is altitude sickness. The trek requires ascending to high altitudes, like Tilicho Lake, located at an approximate elevation of 4,949 meters (16,237 feet). Challenges relating to altitude might be a problem for some trekkers.

Another potential challenge that you might face during this trek is the diverse terrain. The route of this trail traverses through a variety of landscapes. Including communities and forests at lower levels to steep and ice trails at higher altitudes. We advise you to be ready for a variety of terrain and possible difficulties.

Lastly, the Himalayan weather can be very unpredictable, so during the trek you might also face weather-related challenges. The sudden decrease in temperatures might make the trek a bit challenging for you.

However, with our experienced and expert guides, you do not have to worry about these difficulties. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities throughout your journey with us.

Our Advice for Tilicho Lake Trek 10 Days

Here is some of our advice to ensure you have a safe and comfortable trek.

                      • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and cigarettes during your trek. This will minimize the risk for altitude sickness.
                      • Recognize symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness) and inform our guides at any sign of discomfort. We will either descend as soon as possible or provide medical attention.
                      • Use trekking poles for stability and balance on the uneven terrain.
                      • Wear layers of clothing to adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day.
                      • Stay hydrated by sipping water regularly throughout the hike.
                      • Carry cash in local currency for any personal expenses. ATMs might not be available in higher altitudes so make sure to carry some cash.
                      • Ask permission before taking photos of local people.
                      • Carry a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, especially at higher altitudes.
                      • Carry energy-boosting snacks like trail mix, energy bars, and chocolate for quick and convenient fuel along the trail.
                      • Follow the principles of Leave No Trace. Dispose of waste responsibly and avoid damaging the natural surroundings.

Doing the 10 days Tilicho Lake trek in Nepal has always been one of my dream journeys. I'm becoming increasingly excited about this hike since the lake is the most breathtaking lake on the planet. My spouse and I completed this trek with NTA. Mr. Binod is a kind and modest person.

He arranged the timing of everything for us along the journey. He provides the greatest guide for the adventure, Shiva, who is also a charming and fascinating person, in my opinion. I want to express my gratitude to the entire team at Nepal Trek Adventure & Expeditions. Furthermore, I will recommend this travel agency to everyone. Thank you so much, guys!
