Routes and Sceneries of the 7-Day Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

This 7-day Jeep journey to Upper Mustang commences at the beautiful lakeside resort town of Pokhara, which sits at the foot of the Annapurna mountain range. Just by driving out of the town, the scenery quickly shifts from lush green hills to craggy, windswept terrain, symbols of rugged Mustang beauty. The trail is full of spectacular views of the Himalayas, from where you finally emerge into Marpha, a picturesque village that is famous throughout the country for its apple trees and traditional whitewashed houses.

The next destination of the drive goes from Marpha to Chele. The surroundings will seem progressively more secluded and less populated, with very narrow roads passing through little Israeli-style villages through which amazing peeks of distinctive regional culture can be caught: the air is rare, and the scenery turns toward a view of deserts with red and brown hills.

Next on the journey is Ghami, a village elevated at the valley head offering a brilliant view of the mountain range on all sides. This drive between Chele and Ghami is among the most scenic across Mustang, where the road weaves through the valleys, passes by ancient monasteries, and lets you catch a glimpse into the mystical aura of the region.

This is the main point of the tour when you reach the capital of Upper Mustang, Lo Manthang, a very ancient fortified city. Its unique Tibetan architecture and historical monasteries, combined with beautiful views of the mountains, preserve its past. In its isolation, set in the deep gorges and raw lands, lies the beauty of Lo Manthang, lending it an almost surreal touch.

After visiting Lo Manthang, the tour proceeds to the holy place of Muktinath, the sanctuary of Hindus and Buddhists at the foot of the Thorong La Pass. Muktinath also possesses a great scenic drive about visiting Muktinath, where moving mountains and valleys, including great peaks of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri, marvel at them all.

The 7-day Upper Mustang adventure indeed commences at Pokhara, a spectacular city by the lake, where you go on the road toward Marpha. It is about 80 km between Pokhara and Marpha, and the driving usually takes between five to six hours depending on the road conditions. Leaving behind the busy streets of Pokhara, you will slowly start to enter the heavenly beauty of calm and beautiful landscapes in the Annapurna region.

The path winds around beautiful valleys, all showcasing the lush greenery of the forests and little terraced fields. The view along the Seti River makes it dramatic, with the huge mountains of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges soaring magnificently in the background.

Soon, you will find small traditional villages where local people can be seen going about their daily lives, making you experience first-hand rural culture in Nepal.

Drive to reach there goes on to Jomsom, which is an important place in the Mustang region, before heading on to Marpha. This tiny village, situated at an altitude of 2,670 meters, is popular for its apple orchards and Tibetan architectural style. Marpha Monastery, along with narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, enhances the tranquil and scenic charm of Marpha.

As you enter the village, do try some of the apple products, such as cider, popular here. Stand and admire the sights of the Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri peaks; this could simply be a great place to relax and acclimatize for the next days of adventure.

The day begins with a scenic drive from Marpha to Muktinath, covering a distance of approximately 55 kilometers in around 2 to 3 hours. As you ascend through the rugged terrains of the Mustang region, the landscape transforms dramatically. You’ll pass through quaint villages, apple orchards, and the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. The views of the Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri peaks add a majestic backdrop to the journey, creating the perfect setting for adventure.

Upon arrival at Muktinath, a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, you’ll have ample time to explore this spiritual haven. The temple complex features the iconic 108 water spouts and the eternally burning flame, symbols of purification and enlightenment. Pilgrims and travelers alike find peace and a sense of awe in the serene environment. After visiting the temple, enjoy a delicious lunch at a nearby local eatery, where you can savor traditional Nepali flavors while taking in panoramic views of the Himalayan landscape.

After lunch, the journey continues with a drive toward Chele, approximately 65 kilometers away, taking another 4 to 5 hours. The route to Chele is marked by dramatic cliffs, barren landscapes, and occasional glimpses of the Kali Gandaki River. This part of the drive offers a raw and untamed beauty, showcasing the unique geography of the Upper Mustang region. As you arrive in Chele, you’ll settle into your accommodation and have time to relax, reflecting on a day filled with spiritual connection and natural wonders.

We travel from Chele to the village of Ghami, venturing further into the arid and remote areas of Upper Mustang on our third day. The distance covered by this trip is around 20 kilometers, and the time generally taken to travel this route is 4 to 5 hours depending on road conditions. When you go from Chele, the land seems to get rougher, barren with huge open valleys, and, pushing high above, are towering cliffs. Then, it continues through narrow roads that wind through deep canyons and offers breathtaking views of the desolate landscape and high mountain peaks.

Small Tibetan-style villages along the way are the only remnants of life as it was lived for thousands of years. Brightly colored cliffside vistas of stupas, ancient monasteries, and great mouths from time to time housing walls. Chele Monastery is a point of interest along the drive, to pause and appraise its architectural design amid the surrounding landscapes. As you approach Ghami, the colors have become high drama with bright red cliffs, which have much more isolation and mystery for the viewer.

It is a quaint village nestled between majestic hills and will greet you with open arms when you arrive in Ghami. Ghami is famous for its traditional Tibetan-style houses and serene environment, making it a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate in nature. Ghami is also known for its huge Ghami Gompa, a monastery that has beautiful views of the valleys and mountains all around. This journey from the above takes in the past beauty and calmness of Upper Mustang and the unforgettable experience that this travel by road offers through one of the most unique regions of Nepal.

On day 4 of the Upper Mustang jeep tour, you will take a scenic drive from Ghami to the ancient capital of Upper Mustang, Lo Manthang. The distance between Ghami and Lo Manthang is about 32 kilometers, and the journey lasts generally about 5-6 hours depending on the condition of the road.

The way leads to very beautiful, open, desolate, parched lands, magnificent, towering cliffs, and tremendous valleys that enclose Mustang. Leaving Ghami, you will also pass by a handful of fairly preserved Tibetan-style villages, and then suddenly you will be surrounded by dramatic rock formations, embodying the extraordinary ruggedness of this very remote area. You will also find a few older monasteries and chortens (Tibetan stupas) along the path that give more insight into the country's rich spiritual and cultural history.

Another major attraction along the way is the Chhuksang Monastery, which is located in close proximity to the actual village of Chhuksang. It's a small monastery of great significance, perfect for a little break to enjoy the serene atmosphere and to see a few Buddhist artifacts within it. Traveling through here, the landscape continues to become increasingly sparse and dry, from which stark beauty the land offers feels utterly cut off from the rest of Nepal.

As you step into Lo Manthang, one of the most remarkable sights will be this ancient walled city, which preserves much from the moment centuries ago. It is, in itself, a city with high mud walls enclosing Tibetan-style architecture, monasteries that are not fewer than centuries old, and the unique culture that has been passed on from one generation to another. Important sites in the town include the Jampa Monastery, the Thubchen Monastery, as well as the King's Palace, which is the emblem of Lo Manthang's royal past.

In this day journey, you have a glimpse into the heart of Mustang, a glimpse that would include very much in the way of scenery as well as interesting religious and cultural traditions and activities.

On the fifth day of your Upper Mustang Jeep Tour, dedicate the entire day to discovering Lo Manthang, that ancient capital of Upper Mustang. Ranging within richly laid Tibetan culture and heritage, Lo Manthang is an old historical walled city, which is situated at an altitude of 3,840 meters (12,600 feet) with a unique combination of amazing views and interesting cultural experiences.

Start your sightseeing from the renowned historic site of Chhoser Cave, which is said to have been inhabited for many centuries. These caves have been carved into cliff faces and give visitors an idea of how people used to live. Then visit the Lo Manthang Palace, a royal structure that once stood as a residence for the King of Mustang. The palace with its richly designed rooms and surrounding courtyards gives a glimpse of the regality the place must have experienced.

Visit the Ghar Gompa after, another important monastery that has kept its spiritual essence to the local people very dearly. The site's ancient murals render it quite an interesting place, and indeed it is a peaceful setting whose air is idyllic for quiet reflection. A walk around the old lanes of Lo Manthang will fill one's culture basket with a typical bit of Tibetan architectural edifices, monasteries, and colorful bazaars selling local handicrafts and textiles for anyone keen on getting deeper into the local culture.

Peruse your surroundings as you enjoy unending panoramic views of the nearby desert landscapes at the point where soaring mountain ranges meet barren, red hills within the Mustang region. Clear skies, perfect for photography, sweep over them atop the great Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri peaks.

On the sixth day of the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour, you will leave the captivating ancient kingdom of Lo Manthang and begin your journey towards Tatopani, a charming village renowned for its natural hot springs. The drive covers approximately 155 kilometers and takes about 7 to 8 hours, offering a combination of off-road adventure and scenic landscapes. As you descend from the arid, high-altitude terrain of Lo Manthang, you’ll notice the stark contrast in the landscapes, with the barren, rocky surroundings giving way to greener valleys and terraced fields.

Along the route, you’ll pass through several traditional villages such as Ghami and Samar, each showcasing the rich culture and lifestyle of the Mustang region. The drive alongside the Kali Gandaki River offers stunning views of towering cliffs, deep gorges, and scattered settlements. You might also catch glimpses of prayer flags fluttering in the wind and ancient chortens, symbolizing the spiritual essence of the region. This journey also provides a chance to take in panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri ranges, which create a dramatic backdrop to the Mustang landscapes.

Upon reaching Tatopani, you’ll be welcomed by its tranquil ambiance and the soothing hot springs that have made it a favorite stop for trekkers and travelers. These natural springs are rich in minerals and are believed to have therapeutic properties, making them a perfect spot to relax and rejuvenate after the rugged drive. Spend the evening soaking in the warm waters, enjoying the serene environment, and reflecting on the incredible journey through Upper Mustang.

Day 7 marks the return journey from Upper Mustang to Pokhara and draws to a close the round trip that has taken you through some of the most isolated and scenic regions of Nepal. The journey is about 150 kilometers, with an average of 7 to 8 hours of driving depending on the road conditions. The journey stretches through off-road, rugged terrain and covers breathtaking views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges and beautiful pockets of valleys below.

You pass small, quiet villages, wonderful farmland, and the chance to catch little glimpses of life in the Mustang and Gorkha regions. The winding roads are often bare with patches of green huddled in parts, thus creating a very enjoyable and peaceful drive. Jomsom Valley, famous for its apple orchards and scenic views, and the Kali Gandaki River, which miraculously flows inside the road, are the main attractions in this journey.

This last section of the journey takes you towards Pokhara's more developed areas so that you can relax after all those adventures. With its beautiful lakeside view, Pokhara provides ideal conditions for unwinding and reminiscing on that incredible time in Upper Mustang. Today will end with your arrival back in Pokhara, ready to enjoy a well-deserved rest in this thriving tourist hub.

Best Time to Do the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

The best times to go for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour are in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). Weather conditions throughout this season are favorable for travel and sightseeing, as they tend to be clear and mild. Clear skies usually allow the best possible views over the surrounding mountain ranges, like Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. During this time, the weather is extremely comfortable, with warm days and cool nights—suitable for long drives and outdoor activities.

Not a very good season for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour; winter has its peak months from December to February, wherein temperatures can be crazy cold, especially in high altitudes. Summer is from June to August, and this is the best time to expect heavy rains during this monsoon season, thereby making the roads slippery and making them hard to travel through. Thus, visiting Upper Mustang in spring or autumn ensures the best possible weather and road conditions to understand the wonderful landscapes as well as the rich culture of Upper Mustang.

Permits for 6 Night 7 Days Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

This particular area of Nepal, known as Upper Mustang, requires special permits as it is an area earmarked for jeep tours. As this place is highly restricted with respect to cultural and ecological issues, these permits are very crucial for legal and safety purposes. Here is a list of permits that now form part of the itinerary:

                • Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP):

This particular permit is compulsory for any traveler who wishes to visit the Upper Mustang region. The area is restricted because of its cultural and historical importance. The RAP must be arranged beforehand through a licensed trekking agency, and it is valid for only ten days in Upper Mustang. The cost in the market for this permit usually ranges between $500 and $700 per person.

                • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP):

This permit allows visiting the territories of the Annapurna Conservation Area. It is a contribution toward the conservation of the biodiversity and natural resources of the area. The charge for ACAP is around $30 per person.

The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour package won't include all these permits because licensed trekking agencies take care of organizing them on behalf of their clients. However, it should be noted that such permits are arranged mostly in advance, and the cost of such permits varies according to trek type and group size.

Food During the Short Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

Food is an integral part of the journey for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour. It forms an important part of this journey, giving it a sweet blending of local flavors and traditional Nepali dishes. Meals are often served in local tea houses and guest houses as you travel through the tranquillity of a remote Mustang. With great home-style cooking and fresh ingredients coming straight from the region, hearty, stomach-filling meals will fill your diet.

The average menu usually includes popular Nepali dishes such as dal bhat (lentil soup served with rice), momo (dumplings), and thukpa (noodle soup). All these would provide you with much-needed energy as well as warmth during your long days spent travelling around those scenic regions.

Breakfast is porridge, toast, and eggs for most mornings—a light but fortifying start to the day. Lunch and dinner will definitely consist of some traditional Nepali meals, which can be ordered either vegetarian or non-vegetarian. Eating at the greater heights of Upper Mustang usually means very simple but quite filling and nutritious meals, owing to the remoteness of the region, which cuts down on available ingredients.

You will also be able to sample the local delicacies, which include apple pie from Marpha, famous for its apples, or some other local desserts. The food might not be more diversified compared to what you can find in any of the big cities, but the flavors are genuine and make for a comforting ending to each of your exploring days. The food during the Jeep tour is simple but nice and totally fits into charging you through the greatest part of this majestic region in Nepal.

Accommodation During the 7-Day Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

Accommodation during the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour has been curated keeping in mind comfort and ease so you can end a day of adventure with relaxation. During the trip, you will stay in locally owned houses, lodges, and tea houses that typically combine the traditional Tibetan architecture with modern conveniences from the outside world. These properties are ideally located to have easy access to scenic routes and the attractions regarding this peace and comfort for a restful stay.

In Pokhara, you would be opting for well-established hotels for common and international tourists regarding top-notch services and comforts. Further into the Mustang region, accommodations are not the same as they would be found in the city since this was more into the remoteness of the area.

Most important, though, is that these still would have a comfortable bed, warm blankets, and hot meals. Areas like Lo Manthang and Marpha are rugged and quite remote, and despite the ruggedness and the remoteness of these places, the guesthouses enjoy giving that cozy atmosphere in addition to spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

You will enjoy Nepalese and Tibetan food prepared by local chefs through their interaction with the local culture and hospitality. These accommodations would not provide the luxury of five-star hotels, but the warm and breathtaking scenery around would be an unforgettable part of the journey in Upper Mustang.

Exploring Upper Mustang’s Hidden Gems in Style

The 7-day Upper Mustang Jeep Tour was a fantastic way to explore one of Nepal’s most remote and mysterious regions. What struck me most about the trip was the mix of thrilling adventure and convenience. We traveled through rugged, dirt roads that connected us to some of the most breathtaking landscapes I’ve ever seen. The Jeep made it possible to reach secluded villages and hidden gems, some of which are impossible to access on foot.

The tour’s highlight for me was reaching Lo Manthang, the fortified town that feels like a step back in time. Surrounded by dramatic desert landscapes and protected by ancient walls, the city was full of charm and history. We visited a few monasteries, where we witnessed local rituals and learned about the Tibetan influence on the area. Nepal Trek Adventure organized everything to perfection, from our drivers to our guide, who made sure we were well taken care of throughout the journey. This tour is ideal for those who want to see the incredible beauty of Upper Mustang without the intense physical demands of traditional trekking.
